How to prepare for an HIV test?

Preparing for an HIV self-test is usually straightforward, but the exact preparation depends on the type of test you are using. Always read the Instructions for Use supplied with your specific test before you begin.

Before testing, choose a private, well-lit place where you are unlikely to be disturbed. Check that the test is within its expiry date, make sure the packaging is undamaged and have everything you need ready, including a timer if required by the instructions.

For a finger-prick HIV self-test, preparation may include washing and drying your hands and preparing the finger as described in the Instructions for Use.

For an oral-fluid HIV self-test, follow the preparation instructions for that specific product. Some oral-fluid tests have restrictions on eating, drinking or using oral-care products before testing, while other tests may give different preparation instructions.

It can also help to take the test at a time when you feel comfortable and have enough time to perform the procedure and read the result without rushing.

Most importantly, follow the test procedure and reading time exactly as stated in the manufacturer's Instructions for Use.

If you would like help performing your test, see our HIV test step-by-step guides.
