How to read HIV test results?

After taking your at-home HIV test, your results will be ready in about 15 minutes. You can read your results in the control area of your testing cassette. Your results should be read as follows:

  • NEGATIVE: A single red line appears in the control region (C). No apparent red or pink line appears in the test region (T).

  • POSITIVE: Two distinct red lines appear when the sample has been analyzed; one line should be in the control region (C) and another line should be in the test region (T).
    • NOTE: The intensity of the red color in the test line region (T) varies depending on the concentration of HIV antibodies in the sample tested. Any shade of red in the test region (T) should be considered as a positive result.
  • INVALID: Control line (C) fails to appear. This typically means that there was insufficient specimen volume or that an incorrect testing technique was applied. The test should be repeated with a new test cassette.
