Newfoundland HIV Self-Test

The Newfoundland HIV Blood Test is a single-use HIV self-test designed for private use at home. It detects antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2 in a small sample of whole blood obtained from a finger prick.

The all-in-one device incorporates the finger-prick and blood collection process into the test design. Only a small blood sample is required, and the result is read after 15 minutes.

This is a screening test. A positive result does not by itself confirm an HIV diagnosis and must be followed by testing through a healthcare professional.

Test Performance

According to the manufacturer's Instructions for Use, laboratory evaluations found a sensitivity of 99.6% and a specificity of 99.6%. Performance can vary when a self-test is performed outside a laboratory setting, so it is important to follow the supplied instructions carefully.

Always read and follow the Instructions for Use included with the test before testing.

When to Test

HIV antibodies are not detectable immediately after infection. The manufacturer's Instructions for Use describes a window period of approximately 6 to 12 weeks.

Testing during this period may produce a negative result even when HIV infection is present. If it has been less than 3 months since a possible exposure, follow the manufacturer's instructions and test again after the window period has passed.

Possible exposure within the last 72 hours?

Do not wait for a self-test if you believe you may have been exposed to HIV within the last 72 hours. Seek medical advice as soon as possible because post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) may be available and needs to be started promptly.

Understanding Your Result

A non-reactive result does not completely exclude HIV infection if testing was performed during the window period or after a more recent possible exposure.

A reactive result from this self-test is a screening result and must be confirmed by a healthcare professional using appropriate follow-up testing.

If the test does not produce a valid result, use a new test and follow the supplied Instructions for Use. If you are unsure about your result, contact a healthcare professional or recognised HIV testing service.
