Core Rapid HIV Oral Fluid Test

The Core Rapid HIV Saliva Test is a single-use rapid antibody test designed to detect antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2. Although commonly described as a saliva test, the Instructions for Use specify that the specimen is collected from the oral mucosal area along the gums rather than from saliva itself.

According to the Instructions for Use supplied with this test, the product is intended for both self-testing and use in medical institutions. No blood sample is required.

The sample is collected using the supplied oral swab, mixed with the provided buffer and applied to the test cassette. The result should be read between 15 and 20 minutes and should not be interpreted after 20 minutes.

When to Test

This test detects HIV antibodies. Antibodies do not become detectable immediately after infection.

According to the CDC, HIV antibody tests can usually detect infection 23 to 90 days after exposure. This is general guidance for antibody tests and not a product-specific window period stated in the Instructions for Use for this test.

A non-reactive result during the window period does not rule out HIV infection. If you test after a possible exposure and the result is non-reactive, repeat testing may be necessary after the appropriate window period. A healthcare professional or recognised testing service can advise you on the appropriate timing.

If you believe you may have been exposed to HIV within the last 72 hours, seek urgent medical advice rather than waiting for a self-test result. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) may be appropriate and must be started as soon as possible, within 72 hours of exposure.

Understanding Your Result

A reactive result from this rapid HIV antibody test is a screening result and does not by itself confirm an HIV diagnosis. Arrange appropriate follow-up testing through a healthcare professional or recognised testing service.

A non-reactive result does not completely exclude HIV infection, particularly if testing was performed during the window period after a recent possible exposure.

An invalid result cannot be interpreted as reactive or non-reactive. Follow the supplied Instructions for Use and repeat the test with a new device where appropriate.

Always follow the Instructions for Use supplied with the specific test when performing and interpreting the test.
