Recare Rapid HIV Blood Test

The Recare Rapid HIV Blood Test is a single-use rapid antibody test designed to detect antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2 in whole blood.

The test can be performed using finger-prick whole blood or whole blood collected by venipuncture. The sample is applied to the test cassette together with the supplied buffer and the result is read after 15 minutes.

According to the Instructions for Use supplied with this test, the product is intended for professional in vitro diagnostic use only. Always follow the supplied Instructions for Use when collecting the sample, performing the test and interpreting the result.

Test Performance

According to the performance evaluation stated in the Instructions for Use, the test demonstrated a relative sensitivity of 99.5%, a relative specificity of 99.8% and an overall accuracy of 99.8% when compared with an HIV EIA reference method.

Performance figures describe the results of the evaluation reported by the manufacturer and do not mean that an individual test result is guaranteed to be accurate in every circumstance.

When to Test

This test detects HIV antibodies. HIV antibodies do not become detectable immediately after infection.

According to the CDC, antibody tests can usually detect HIV approximately 23 to 90 days after exposure. This is general guidance for HIV antibody tests and is not a product-specific window period stated in the Instructions for Use for this Recare test.

A non-reactive result during the window period does not rule out HIV infection. If testing takes place after a recent possible exposure, repeat testing after the appropriate window period may be necessary. A healthcare professional or recognised testing service can advise you on the appropriate timing.

If you believe you may have been exposed to HIV within the last 72 hours, seek urgent medical advice rather than waiting for a test result. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) should be started as soon as possible when indicated and no later than 72 hours after exposure.

Understanding Your Result

A reactive result from this rapid HIV antibody test is a screening result and does not by itself confirm an HIV diagnosis. Additional appropriate testing is required to confirm a reactive result.

A non-reactive result does not completely exclude HIV infection, particularly when testing takes place during the window period after a recent possible exposure.

An invalid result cannot be interpreted as reactive or non-reactive. Follow the Instructions for Use and repeat the test with a new device where appropriate.
